[Press]Kyungil University acquires temporary autonomous driving license

20 May 2021

Kyungil University (President Jeong Hyun-tae) announced on the 28th that it has obtained a temporary license for autonomous driving level 3 from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport as a vehicle converted from a domestic miniature electric vehicle 'D2'.

This is the fifth domestic university to have acquired it after Seoul National University, Hanyang University, KAIST, and Yonsei University, and it is the first in Korea to acquire an autonomous driving license based on a two-seater micro electric vehicle.

Vehicles that obtained temporary autonomous driving licenses were produced and developed targeting personal mobility-type autonomous vehicles of future smart cities. This vehicle is an autonomous driving sensor system that combines two 360-degree lidars, a front camera, and GPS in a miniature two-seater electric vehicle, and realizes an urban autonomous driving function through location-aware map matching based on a precision map.

Kyungil University's autonomous vehicle convergence technology research institute plans to conduct various tests on actual complex city roads as it acquires an autonomous driving license. It plans to complete the perfect urban autonomous driving function.

Kang Woo-Jong, head of the research center, said, "Since it is difficult to install autonomous driving equipment and technology in a small electric vehicle with a narrow space, it is a key technology to make the related equipment smaller and lighter. We will also develop autonomous driving shuttle buses to and from campus,” he said.

President Jeong Hyun-tae said, "Autonomous driving technology is the core of the 4th industrial revolution, which encompasses artificial intelligence, information communication, GPS, robots, and electronic control. Kyungil University will take the lead in taking the leap forward.”
